Staff and student governors
Ben Sims - Staff Governor
Ben is our Staff Governor, as well as Student Support Team Leader at Reading College and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead for Activate Learning. Ben began his career in management aged 21, when he was appointed to a deputy manager role with The Whitbread Group in South Wales. His passion for education was re-ignited when he moved to England and became a Learning Support Assistant at Reading College.
During his five years at Reading College, Ben has advanced through the progression opportunities offered by Activate Learning. Ben’s main interest at work is how emotions impact individuals’ ability to perform in their personal and professional lives. He believes that building rapport and trust with individuals is vital, to inspire a decision to change which can lead to a more positive mindset and circumstances, and enable someone to succeed.
Away from work, Ben enjoys travelling and visiting family in Wales. Having grown up performing in choirs, orchestras and bands for Greater Gwent, music has been a huge part of Ben’s life and he continues to hone his skills as a pianist.
Anja Owona Okoa - Student Governor
Anja is our student governor, a second year A-Level science student at Reading College. She is an aspiring medical doctor currently studying Biology, Chemistry and Psychology.
Aside from science, Anja has enjoyed a range of activities outside of class, including a keen interest in the performing arts. With years of experience in piano and singing, she chose to study Music at GCSE level. Whilst studying Drama GCSE, she had joined a theatre group in Reading. Having taken dance lessons from a young age, she now enjoys teaching dance in her spare time.
Anja's strong cultural background is something she takes pride in. She has origins in two African countries and French nationality, and has grown up in the UK. To add to this, her family became expatriated in the Middle East due to her father's job. Her background has shaped her to be exceptionally resilient, adaptable and open-minded.
With her scientific, cultural and artistic profile in mind, Anja campaigned as Students' Union president for this academic year and gladly accepted the position and that of student governor, and is keen to use her skills to help move Activate Learning forward.
