The art of shoe design and making

This spring, National Art and Design Saturday Club members at Banbury and Bicester College joined a shoe masterclass with one of the UK's foremost artists and designers.

William Warren runs a furniture and product design consultancy which works with manufacturers, distributors and retailers. He is a Senior Lecturer at London Metropolitan University and also lectures at Kingston University, Goldsmiths College, Camberwell College of Art and Central Saint Martins.

William took the students through each step of the shoe design and making process. They began with an introduction to shoe design, so that the students were able to understand what will be needed for the rest of the project.

The students were then taken through the process of making a prototype based on their own foot. This was then translated into a pattern for them to be able to assemble their work into a wearable shoe.

The class was a great chance for Britain’s next generation to meet and work with one of the best artists and designers practising today and to gain first-hand advice from a new role model. This great opportunity was made possible thanks to Jo Mieszkowski from The Saturday Club Trust, who organised the masterclass.
