70 new Technology faculty students were able to meet and work with employers within the first 30 minutes of starting their new courses at Banbury and Bicester College.
The event was organised through Founders4schools, an organisation that strives to bring employers and educators together in a cohesive and mutually beneficial manner.
Each employer had a room to base themselves in and the new students followed a rota to ensure that they all had an opportunity to give their presentations and receive questions from the students.
The presentations were all very different and the students were excited by their variety and insights that they were given. David Wortley, CEO of Iorma, created a 360 film of his talk whist simultaneously broadcasting his speech on Facebook and a student was very keen and stepped in to operate the camera. Andrew Langdale from The Management Academy Ltd gave an insightful presentation on the importance of soft skills in the industry and Graham Morrell the CEO of Flowmax Ltd, a company turning over £33 Million last year, outlined the different skills and attributes that are required for different types of jobs. Howard Lewis, CEO of Fuss Free Phones, delivered a inspiring talk about entrepreneurship and connected so well with the students that he has offered to return to run a project to help them to develop their entrepreneurial skills. Deborah Trujilo-Philipopoulos from ComputerXplorers and Sue Priest from ScienceClubz, who have previously worked with the Technology faculty, encouraged the students to take up a fantastic opportunity of work experience with their companies.
Dion Van Overdijk, Technology Faculty Manager, said: “Working with employers and ensuring that our students are ready for the workplace truly starts from day one. It was fantastic to set our students on the right track by immediately giving them the experience of being in front of key employers, attending presentations, asking questions, learning how to conduct themselves and gaining an insight into what skills, knowledge and experience they need to develop in order to succeed in their future careers. We are very grateful to all of the employers who gave their time to work with us. It is fantastic to be preparing the workforce of the future in such a joined up way.”
The six employers will be returning to attend an end of year show in the summer to observe how the students develop over the academic year and to see the impact of their contribution.
